Description
Join Brooklyn Historical Society and City Growers at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Election Day 2016 to engage with scholarship in bee-keeping, urban agriculture, and sustainable design. In the morning, teachers will engage with expert bee-keepers and urban agriculturists, Cara Chard and Courtney Epton, City Growers' Executive Director and Director of Education, on the theory and practice of urban agriculture, bee-keeping, and how teachers can use these topics in their STEM classrooms.
In the afternoon, teachers will complete two tours and two curricula activities. Participants will visit the Brooklyn Grange's 1.5 acre roof-top farm and learn how to create worm-composting bins with City Growers. With Brooklyn Historical Society, teachers will tour BLDG 92, a LEED Platinum certified building and learn how to use recycled materials to create bee hotels with their students.
Teachers will leave with theoretical knowledge, practical classroom activities, and local resources for making your STEM classroom come to life.
Participant fee includes light breakfast and full lunch.
